An Alternative Song for Palm Sunday

Posted on March 10, 2012

Maybe Sonny, the reluctant donkey, would process more comfortably if the crowd sang a little country music? Some Sugarland, perhaps?

I’ve replaced “Rise Up Ye Saints of God” with “Shout to the North,” but I’ve also reworked the lyrics to the song.  Now we are singing not simple, generic words about the healing power of Jesus but instead about the implications of that healing in places like Northern Ireland and in Alabama (around racism). Finally, I added Sugarland’s “Stand Up” as a decent secular alternative to both songs.

For those of you working on “Palm Sunday,” I imagined using this Sugarland song as a modern alternative to “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” or any of the other kind of lame songs we often invite children to sing as they wave palm branches.
